EcoMobility World Festivals
The Urban Idea pursues a series of EcoMobility World Festivals. These Festivals are not just events - each Festival is a temporary mise-en-scène of future urban life in a real city, by real people, in real time. The Festivals were conceived by Konrad Otto-Zimmermann, former Secretary General of ICLEI and Creative Director at The Urban Idea.
The EcoMobility World Festival 2017 under the motto "One neighborhood, one month, ecomobile" took place in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, from 1-31 October 2017.
Mayor Chen Chu: "Kaohsiung has been striving to transform from a heavy-industry city to a livable city over the past decade. One important and effective strategy is actively participating in ICLEI. After witnessing the success of the Suwon (2013) and Johannesburg (2015) festivals, Kaohsiung was determined to host the third EcoMobility World Festival in 2017 to bring the ecomobility approach into practice in the city. After two years of preparation and overcoming various unprecedented challenges, we are very proud to present the successes of the one-month festival. The event brought together forty-three countries, fifty-three cities, 1,200 participants, and over 300,000 citizens and revolved around three main themes, which were also our messages to the world: Livable. Shared. Intelligent."
The EcoMobility World Festival 2015 took take place from 1-31 October 2015 in Johannesburg, South Africa.
wanted to close off certain streets in Sandton, our second largest
Central Business District (CBD) to car traffic and instead use these
lanes for public transport, walking, cycling and other forms of
EcoMobility during the entire Transport Month in October next year",
announced the Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Cllr Parks
Tau. "We wanted to show residents and visitors that an ecomobile lifestyle
is possible and that public transport, walking and cycling can be
accessible, safe, attractive and cool!"
The EcoMobility World Festival 2015 mobilized and raised local and international support for ecomobile alternatives to fossil-fuel transport. The Festival showcased the new Rea Vaya bus rapid transport scheme and public transport-, cycling- and walking-friendly infrastructure that the city has been constructing in Sandton CBD.
The first Festival of this kind took place in Suwon, South Korea, in September 2013.
Organized by the City of Suwon and ICLEI, and co-presented by UN-HABITAT, the Festival featured an ecomobile neighborhood, an EcoMobility vehicles exhibition, a test track, the EcoMobility 2013 Suwon congress, several conferences as well as a multitude of cultural events.
The 4,300 residents of the Haenggung-dong neighborhood removed their 1,500 cars from the area and adopted an ecomobile lifestyle for an entire month.
The City of Suwon counted over 1 million visits of the various places and events.
